Healthcare in Dubai is excellent — if you know how to use it. The system is built around private providers funded by mandatory employer insurance, with a parallel public system available to UAE nationals and residents at subsidised rates. As an expat, private is your primary path.
Dubai law requires all residents to have health insurance. Employers are legally required to provide it for their employees. Freelancers, investors, and visa applicants must arrange their own. This is not optional — it is a condition of your residence visa.
Oud Metha
US-accredited, strong emergency department, widely trusted by the expat community. Best all-rounder.
Dubai Hills Estate
UK NHS-affiliated — familiar system for British expats. Excellent maternity unit and oncology.
Healthcare City
Large network across UAE with all major specialities. On most employer insurance plans.
Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi
World-renowned — worth the Abu Dhabi trip for complex procedures or specialist second opinions.
Arjan (near Motor City)
Newer facility with excellent equipment. Ideal for residents in south and west Dubai.
Jumeirah & JBR
Good for GP and outpatient care in central Dubai locations. Convenient for Jumeirah-area residents.
Ensure your preferred hospitals are on your insurer's approved list. Mediclinic and American Hospital are on most major plans — King's College Hospital is on fewer, worth checking explicitly.
Many policies require you to pay 10–20% of each claim. Check the maximum annual out-of-pocket cap — this matters significantly for major procedures or hospitalisations.
Basic employer plans often exclude dental and vision. If these matter, ask about upgrades when you join your company — it is usually cheaper to add at onboarding.
Pre-existing pregnancy is often excluded for 10–12 months after the policy start date. If you're planning a family, flag this before choosing your plan.
Premium international plans include medical evacuation and repatriation to the UK. Essential if you have complex medical needs or travel frequently for work.
Dubai has an excellent pharmacy network — most open until 10pm or midnight, many 24/7. Aster Pharmacy and Life Pharmacy are the largest chains. Many UK medications available over the counter in Dubai require a prescription at home. Some controlled substances are very strictly regulated; always carry a medical certificate if travelling with prescription medication through the airport.
Healthcare costs and insurance requirements change. Verify current mandatory insurance rules with the Dubai Health Authority (dha.gov.ae) or your HR department.
