Driving in Dubai
Driving is the primary mode of transport for most residents. The road infrastructure is exceptional, but it comes with a few local systems you must understand before you start.
Driving Licence Conversion
If you hold a licence from an approved country (including the UK, USA, Canada, and most EU nations), you can typically swap your foreign licence for a UAE one without taking lessons or a test.
Salik (The Toll System)
Dubai uses a "gate-less" RFID toll system called Salik. There are several gates across major highways (like Sheikh Zayed Road). Each time you pass through, you are charged AED 4 automatically.
You must purchase a Salik tag (available at petrol stations) and stick it to your windshield. Top-ups are done via the Salik app or website.
Public Transport
The Dubai Metro is one of the most advanced automated rail systems in the world. It is clean, reliable, and essential for avoiding rush-hour traffic.
The Nol Card
You cannot pay for public transport (Metro, Tram, or Bus) with cash or standard credit cards at the gate. You must use a "Nol Card."
Silver Card
Regular commuters
Gold Card
Access to Gold Class cabins
Red Ticket
Tourists & one-off trips
Buying vs. Leasing
For new arrivals, leasing a car for the first 3-6 months is highly recommended. It allows you to build a local credit history before applying for a car loan and gives you time to decide which vehicle suits your Dubai lifestyle.
Pro Tip: Use Hala Taxi
Download the Careem app. It is the only way to book standard city taxis (Hala) at fixed government rates. Avoid "luxury" car options unless you specifically need them, as Hala is significantly cheaper and just as fast.
Always check the latest RTA (Roads & Transport Authority) regulations at rta.ae for up-to-date fees and driving rules.
